WASHINGTON — South Korean tech giant Samsung, which has practiced showing advertisements in their stock apps for Weather, Pay, and Theme has recently confirmed that it will be changing its policy on this topic soon.
Samsung has said that it will stop showing ads in its proprietary apps by the end of this year, the company said in a statement.
“Samsung has made a decision to cease the advertisement on proprietary apps including Samsung Weather, Samsung Pay, and Samsung Theme,” Samsung said in a statement.
“The update will be ready later this year. Our priority is to deliver innovative mobile experiences for our consumers based on their needs and wants. We value feedback from our users and continue our commitment to provide them with the best possible experience from our Galaxy products and services.”
The development aligns with what Samsung mobile head T.M. Roh said in an internal town hall meeting. The move will likely be welcomed by users of Samsung handsets and applications.
“We have been seeking new growth opportunities in the fields of content and advertising services such as games and media to strengthen the integrated Galaxy ecosystem experience,” said Roh.
“It is our most important mission to innovate the consumer experience based on this.”
While workarounds around the ads exist, or you could use different apps, it is understandable that having to see ads or put in an extra effort not to see them is not a desirable user experience, especially on premium smartphones.
Samsung recently unveiled a series of new products at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event.
Samsung launched the updated ‘Z’ lineup comprising the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The company also unveiled the Galaxy Watch 4 and Samsung Galaxy Buds 2.
“With the new Galaxy Z series, we’re bringing foldable innovations to more consumers by breaking down the barriers of entry with our prices,” said Bryan Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing, Mobile Communications Business, Samsung, in a blog.
“I am confident that with our new Galaxy Z series, we can drive record high demand for foldable, inviting even more consumers to enjoy this new way of using their smartphone.”
Samsung also announced two smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 4 (which starts at $249) and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (starting at $349).
“Galaxy Watch4 is the first Galaxy Watch to offer Body Composition analysis, a measurement that instantly provides a complete snapshot of your overall fitness,” said Janghyun Yoon, Executive Vice President and Head of Software Platform Team Mobile Communications Business, Samsung.
“Together, these features offer users a more holistic and helpful understanding of their health.”
