An obviously anxious crowd gathered at the New Hanover County School Board yesterday afternoon as Chairman of the New Hanover County School Board, Ed Higgins announced that the board had reached the unanimous decision to select Dr. Tim Markley, Superintendent of Catawba County Schools, as New Hanover County Schools' next superintendent. It was apparent that Dr. Markley shined brightly among two other contenders, Dr. Donna Hargens, Interim Superintendent of Wake County Schools, and New Hanover County's very own, Dr. Rick Holliday, who currently serves as Assistant Superintendent.
In his statement, Higgins expressed that Dr. Markley ''demonstrated an extensive knowledge of education, and…he will be a tremendous asset to this county''. According to Higgins, Dr. Markley impressed the board members with ''his sense of leadership'', ''his vision'', and ''his interesting approaches to education.'' Board member Janice Cavenaugh described him as ''young and committed'' and further commended him for his proven track record, which includes reducing the drop-out rate in Catawba County.
Higgins informed the audience that Dr. Markley is held bound to a 90-day notice in his current contract with Catawba County Schools; therefore, it may be as late as November 1 before he can officially assume his role as superintendent. In the meantime, Dr. Markley will visit the county occasionally in order to ''meet people'' and ''get to know the system''. In fact, he has already committed to attend convocation on August 20.
Just minutes before the press conference, which was held at 1:00 p.m., Dr. Markley accepted the position and the terms of the contract, which will end on June 30, 2014. The offer included an attractive salary of $200,000 per year. Higgins said Dr. Markley was pleased as he had already ''expressed a desire early on that he wanted to come to New Hanover County.''
Higgins expressed, ''We look forward to moving forward with Dr. Markley…I hope that we can count on the support of the school system and the citizens.''
Dr. Markley accepted his current position in 2005, just before he returned to North Carolina after serving as superintendent of the White Mountains Regional School District in New Hampshire. In the earlier years of his career, he spent time in the classroom as a teacher, and eventually began a career in school administration as an assistant principal and principal in Cumberland County Schools. Dr. Markley received a bachelor of arts from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a master's in School Administration from Fayetteville State University and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
